Measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. Update on Legionnaires’ Cluster Associated with a Hotel in Spain

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

Nurses

Our practice nursing team includes Sue Smith, Alison Blincowe, Sue Hazell and Sarah Sanders. Members of the team are available, by appointment, for advice on health matters, immunisations, family planning and dietary needs. They also offer a wide range of nursing care services, which include dressings, cervical smears, blood tests, ear syringing, ECGs, and programmes of care for chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Practice Management

Our Manager is Mr Trevor Warner. He is responsible for the day-to-day running of the health centre and oversees all aspects of the service we provide to you. If you have a complaint, criticism, suggestion (or even thanks!), please ask at reception to speak to him. Your views are always welcome and help us to provide the best possible service to all our patients.

Administration

admin team Mrs Sue Lawry is our Medical secretary and provides the written link between the doctors and the rest of the NHS.

Prescriptions

Mrs Maureen Thompson operates our repeat prescription system for patients on regular medication. E-mail requests for repeat prescriptions may be made by clicking on the "Repeat Prescriptions" icon on the Home page.

Reception

Mrs Sandie Gardiner heads our team of receptionists. In addition to booking appointments with the doctors and practice nurses, the receptionists will do their best to answer any queries you may have. Please treat them as courteously as you would expect them to treat you. Sometimes they may have to ask you for further details in order to assess how best to help you. Please help them by being as concise as possible about your requirements. All our staff will respect your privacy and are bound by the same rules of confidentiality as the doctors and nurses. If you wish to discuss your needs in private, we have an interview room available for this purpose.

Community Midwives

Our midwives Becky Fisher and Mandy Anderson oversee all aspects of your pregnancy and confinement.

Community Nurses

Wendy Coulton District Nurses heads

the district nurse team attached to the Broadshires Health Centre. They provide nursing care to individuals in their own homes either before admission to hospital or after they have been discharged. They also provide care for people who do not need admission to hospital, but need care in the home. The district nurses can also provide a link to other parts of the NHS and to Social Services as well as supporting both formal and informal carers. They work closely with their GP colleagues and with other practice-based staff. The service operates from 8:00am to 4:30pm seven days a week and the district nurses can be contacted directly on 01993 867148. Messages left on this number are collected regularly throughout the day until 4:00pm. After that time your message will be responded to on the following day.

Health Visitors

Our health visitors, Helen Bridgewater and Kathy Green, are fully qualified nurses who have received additional training in family and child health. They offer a home visiting service and run well baby clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week from 1:00 to 3:00pm. They are available to help all families with children up to the age of 18 years, and have special expertise in the everyday challenges of parenthood in areas such as dental health, healthy eating, sleep problems, behavioural difficulties, bedwetting, postnatal depression and the management of eczema. The health visitors also run postnatal support groups for first-time mothers and offer antenatal and postnatal visits. A separate support group specifically for young mothers is also available, run by health visitor Helen Bridgewater. A key part of their role is the provision of developmental screening for all children. This includes advice on immunisations, healthy living, the prevention of diseases and safety in the home. Attached Staff

Vicky Kirby is a qualified nurse with additional training and experience in the health of school-aged children. She is the nurse responsible for Carterton Community College, Burford School, and all their feeder primary schools.
The school health service offers routine immunisations for year 10 children, together with health education and promotion that cover a wide range of health-related areas.

Vicky also works in the 'Bodyzone', which runs at the Allendale Youth House on Mondays after school. Bodyzone provides health care advice for young people on a wide range of topics including contraception. She also works closely with her health visitor colleagues and can be contacted on 01993 867149. Messages can also be left on this number for Vicky, who works part-time during school term times only.
